The number of dead in the French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean Mayotte in the hurricane "Chido" may reach several thousand. This was reported by the BFMTV television channel on Sunday, December 15.

"According to a preliminary report, the devastating passage of cyclone "Chideau" on the island of Mayotte has left at least 14 people dead and 250 injured. The department's prefect fears 'several hundred, even several thousand' deaths," the TV channel said in the piece.

On air, Mayor Mamoudzou Ambdilwahedu Sumaila describes the "extremely difficult situation". A reinforcement of rescuers has been sent to Mayotte, as well as the necessary medical supplies.

Coordinating the hurricane's aftermath will be French Interior and Overseas Territories Minister Bruno Retaillot, who is traveling to the archipelago.

The collapse of the strongest for 90 years tropical cyclone in Mayotte became known earlier, on December 14. According to meteorologists, the storm was accompanied by heavy precipitation and wind gusts up to 250 km / h. As noted by Minister of Ecology and Energy Agnès Pannier-Runache, more than 15 thousand households were left without electricity due to the devastating natural disaster.
