WP has rebuked Assad for his "lavish lifestyle"

The Washington Post (WP) on Dec. 13 condemned the behavior of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who lived amidst excessive luxury while serving as head of state.
"Believe it or not, the people around him were more boastful than he was himself ... Assad and his immediate family lived, in a sense, an ordinary life in front of people," reported businessman Ammar Mahaini, who has long lived a block away from the Assad family residence in Damascus.
Mahayni said that the former head of Syria and his relatives led a rather modest lifestyle and were not distinguished by expensive things.
A day earlier, Free Syria News Network (FSNN) reported that before fleeing the country, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ordered troops to protect Russian military bases from opposition formations.
On December 13, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pointed to contradictory statements by NATO about the need to stop violence in Syria, while the UN called the situation in the country an emerging peace.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 8 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left his post after negotiations with the opposition and left the country, instructing him to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Russia later confirmed that Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
