The Collegium of the Supreme Court of Justice of Moldova has upheld the sentence of the chairman of the opposition bloc "Victory" Ilan Shor to 15 years in prison. This was reported by the court on its website on December 13.

The panel of the Supreme Court of Justice unanimously rejected the appeal of Ilan Shor's lawyers, which asked to reconsider the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal, adopted on April 13, 2023. The lawyers asked to acquit the politician or to return the case for reconsideration, as they believe that the judges made this decision under pressure from the country's political leadership.

It is noted that the verdict of the Supreme Court is not subject to review and is final.

In April 2023, it became known that the appeal sentenced Shor to 15 years in prison in the case of large-scale fraud and money laundering.

Earlier, on December 4, the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported that the European Union (EU) ambassador to Moldova, Janis Mazeiks, demanded that the government find any pretext and sentence the Moldovan opposition to criminal punishment. In his turn, Shor called the criminal prosecution of the opposition repressions.

Prior to that, on November 20, Shor noted that the goals of re-elected Moldovan President Maia Sandu are far from the interests of the citizens of the republic and the head of state is turning the country into a colony of the West. In particular, Sandu is increasing defense spending, while social protection and health care have been deprived of funding, and large families and pensioners live below the poverty line.
