US President-elect Donald Trump realizes that his country is not able to support confrontation on several fronts at once - with China, in Ukraine and in the Middle East. Thus, the American leader sees the need to stop or freeze the Ukrainian conflict. This was stated by political scientist Ivan Mezyukho to Izvestia on December 13.

On the eve of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources, reported that Trump proposed to deploy EU troops in Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire. It is noted that, according to the politician, Europe should take the main role in providing security and support for Ukraine.

"We can not authentically assert that the information posted in The Wall Street Journal is true. Western mass media have destroyed their own institution of reputation over the past few years. <...> But theoretically, it is possible to assume that the US president-elect really supports the idea of deploying European troops in Ukraine and thus is a continuation of the policy of the still-active administration of President Joe Biden," Mezyukho commented.

At the same time, he noted, it is obvious that Trump is promoting the idea according to which the costs of maintaining the Kiev regime should be borne to a greater extent by the EU and the UK.

"Even 10-15 years ago, the US could wage three or four conflicts at the same time. Today, the American state is battered and its resources are not the same as some period of time ago. I think Trump is getting closer to more or less formalizing his vision, a solution, as he believes, to the Ukrainian issue. In any case, his strategy will be somewhat different from the strategy on Ukraine of his predecessor," added the interlocutor of the publication.

Thus, he emphasized, one should not expect radical changes in the US policy on the Ukrainian issue, but it will change objectively. The political analyst also suggested that the WSJ publication may be an attempt to "probe" Russia's reaction to the proposal to deploy troops of Western countries in Ukraine.

"Naturally, the participation of the European military contingent in the Ukrainian crisis is unacceptable for the Russian Federation, and if such a decision is final and enters the phase of its realization, the response will be brutal and, most likely, immediate," the expert concluded.

Earlier, on December 11, Reuters reported that Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose powers expired in May, and French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris that he wanted a ceasefire and negotiations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, commenting on this, said that if the administration of the president-elect is serious about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is ready to consider the proposals.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recalled on December 8 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had repeatedly said that Russia was open for talks on Ukraine and welcomed proposals from China, India, Brazil and other countries.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
