The extradition to Russia of Colombian Ramirez Munoz, accused of drug smuggling and trafficking, was unforeseen. This was stated to Izvestia on December 13 by Christian Lamesa, an international analyst, writer, and ambassador of the Russian society "Znanie" in Argentina.

He said the news of the extradition came as a surprise.

"The decision came as a surprise because usually South American countries do not extradite their citizens. Perhaps this is an attempt by Bogota to establish relations with Moscow," the expert said.

Lamesa pointed to a drug trafficking network through Ukraine, adding that a large number of Colombian mercenaries "from paramilitary groups, guerrilla groups and the Colombian army" are there.

According to the analyst, they have already repeatedly received funding from drug cartels. The expert urged not to rule out this connection.

"In addition, it is worth remembering the drug trafficking that the United States has facilitated by being in regions such as Afghanistan and Southeast Asia," Lameza explained.

The day before, the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry said that Munoz was extradited from the Republic of Colombia to Russia accompanied by officers of the NCB Interpol of the Russian Interior Ministry and the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.

According to preliminary information, in May 2016, the accused, together with accomplices, organized the transportation of cocaine from Colombia to Russia by air. The drug with a total weight of more than 3.2 kg was hidden in two postal items.

It is noted that in November 2017, the defendant in the case was put on an international wanted list and thanks to the use of Interpol channels was detained in Colombia.
