TheUnited States uses the same methods against Russia and China in order to break away from the state-forming nation to separate ethnic groups. This opinion was shared on December 13 by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev in his article "On National Identity and Political Choice: The Experience of Russia and China," published in the journal International Life.

"Today, incitement of interethnic or interracial enmity is reduced to the construction of a national pseudo-identity of any ethnic group to break away from the state-forming people," he wrote.

According to him, the United States uses such methods not only against Russia, but also against China and other countries. At the same time, he noted "attempts to invent Taiwanese statehood, nation or language," which he called artificial.

Earlier in the day, Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared with Izvestia an opinion that Washington and Beijing may tighten mutual sanctions after the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. He added that the countries' relations are more likely to worsen.

Before that, on November 24, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said that the United States was using Taiwan to fuel conflict in Asia in order to realize its interests. The diplomat noted that the situation in Taiwan is within the exclusive competence of the PRC. However, Washington is strengthening military and political contacts with Taipei in violation of the "one China" principle it recognizes.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said at a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on Nov. 17 that the United States should not interfere in the South China Sea disputes and the Taiwan issue. He urged Washington to respect Beijing's "red lines."

The conflict between China and Taiwan escalated after a visit to the island by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August 2022. The Chinese side considers Taiwan its territory, so it views visits to the island by officials from other countries as support for Taiwan's independence.

Official relations between the PRC government and its island province broke down in 1949 when the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, who lost in a civil war with the Communist Party of China, moved to Taiwan. Contacts between the island and mainland China resumed in the late 1980s. The U.S. openly supports the Taiwanese authorities.
