Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev has been elected president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). The decision was made at the annual Olympic meeting held in Moscow on Friday, December 13.

Degtyarev was the only candidate, 197 delegates of the annual meeting voted for him, two abstained.

Earlier at the meeting, Degtyarev noted that the ROC's development strategy will be aimed at removing all restrictions from Russian sports, including the return of the country's flag and anthem to athletes at international competitions.

On November 27, the All-Russian Canoe Sprint Federation (VFGBC) nominated Degtyarev for the post of president of the Russian Olympic Committee. The decision was made by a vote of the presidium of the WFGBK.

In October, the head of the ROC Stanislav Pozdnyakov said that he was going to resign and expects that the executive committee of the organization will hold early elections of the committee's leadership in December. He explained that such a decision was due to geopolitical challenges, because of which Russian sport needs to be optimized.
