US President-elect Donald Trump has turned out to be one of the most controversial figures in the US political field. Despite a massive campaign against him and active discrediting in the press, he managed to win the votes of voters and return to the White House even more powerful than he was. Five facts about the most powerful leader according to Time magazine - in the material of "Izvestia".

Fact 1: Survived two attempts on his life

During the election campaign, two attempts were made on the life of Donald Trump, the US presidential candidate from the Republican Party. The first incident occurred on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump, standing behind the podium, was making a speech when several shots rang out in his direction. As a result, one person in attendance was killed and four were wounded. One of the bullets traveled a short distance from Trump's head, piercing his ear - it is believed that an accidental turn of the head at the time of the shot saved the politician's life. The shooter, whose motives, according to the official version, could not be established, was killed by a US Secret Service sniper. For the country, it was the first case of an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate since 1972. A major investigation was launched into the Secret Service, which is obliged to protect presidents and candidates for the highest office, as agents left Trump virtually unprotected.

The second assassination attempt occurred on Sept. 15 while Trump was golfing at his own Trump International Golf Club in Florida. He was surrounded by security, and Secret Service agents spotted a man hiding in the bushes and aiming a rifle at Trump. After the shooter was apprehended, it was revealed that he had voted for Trump in 2016, but then changed his sympathies in favor of the Democratic Party.

On October 14, Trump allegedly escaped another assassination attempt. In California, an armed man was detained in the area of a checkpoint near the venue of the Republican's campaign rally. True, the FBI does not link this incident to an assassination attempt on Trump.

Fact 2: He won the election against all odds

Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election was in doubt until the last moment. Against him was activated the entire administrative resource of the Democratic Party, including the deep state ("deep state", under this term is often understood the bureaucratic apparatus of the White House, the Pentagon, the CIA and the FBI. We explained in detail about who actually determines US policy, here here). The presidential candidate was indicted on several charges, some social networks blocked his statements, and the American press launched a whole campaign to harass the candidate, who was accused of forgery of classified documents, sex scandals and ties with Russia.

When incumbent President Joe Biden lost the race to Kamala Harris, many believed that the Democratic Party would be able to retain the presidency. But Trump managed to attract even those voters who traditionally voted for Democrats to his side.

Fact 3: He was convicted during the campaign

Donald Trump was indicted on several charges during the campaign, but only four criminal cases went to trial. The presidential candidate faced a maximum of up to 717.5 years in prison. There is no indication in U.S. law that a presidential candidate must not have a criminal record.

Trump has been accused of allegedly falsifying financial records in the case of porn actress Stormy Daniels, taking classified documents out of the White House during his first term and storing them at his own residence at Mar-a-Lago, attempting to revise the Georgia vote and trying to revise the outcome of the 2020 election when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol and prevented Congress from completing the counting of electoral votes.

While the punishment for most of the charges could be limited to a fine, the foreign press had no doubt that Trump would be imprisoned for up to 20 years because the charges, according to his supporters, were politically motivated. The Democratic Party tried to use the "criminal candidate" card, but it was not successful. Trump's victory in the electoral vote brought him not only the presidency of the United States, but also the dismissal of all charges and an end to criminal prosecution.

Fact 4: He promised to expel all migrants

One of the main pre-election promises of the US presidential candidate was the fight against migrants. The incumbent President Joe Biden made it easier to legalize migrants inside the country, and soon the influx of illegals at the border with Mexico turned into a migration crisis. Fighting uncontrolled migration became a top request of voters.

After the election, Trump said that his administration might even use the army and declare a state of emergency to mass deport illegal migrants. On December 8, the US president-elect confirmed that he plans to expel all illegal migrants within four years. They may also include those who entered the country legally, but did not have time to obtain asylum or residence permits. An exception will be made only for those who came to the states at a young age and have already lived in the country for a long time.

Fact 5- Speaking from a garbage truck and working at McDonald's

After Trump's opponent Kamala Harris talked about working hard at the McDonald's restaurant chain during college, noting that it's hard to imagine Donald Trump in that position, the Republican candidate himself donned a branded apron and cooked and handed out several servings of fast food. To the customers who caught his shift, he informed them that those portions were on him.

On Oct. 28, there was a scandal that could bury Trump's campaign. At the opening of a campaign rally in New York, American comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made an unfortunate joke calling Puerto Rico (the country is under U.S. administration but not one of the states) a floating trash island. President Joe Biden's office then commented on the situation, calling Trump supporters trash.

In response, the Republican candidate drove through the state of Wisconsin on a garbage truck with the word "Trump" on the body. He dedicated his action to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The American press considered that the "garbage scandal" became a lifeline for the election campaign of the Republicans.
