Indian grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh became the 18th world chess champion after defeating his Chinese rival Ding Lizhen in Singapore on December 12.

The chess players played a total of 14 games over a period of more than two weeks. Gukesh won 7.5-6.5.

In the last game the Indian played with black pieces. Lizhen made a mistake on the 55th move and surrendered three moves later.

Gukesh is 18 years old. Thus, he became by far the youngest world chess champion in history.

At the end of April, Gukesh won the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto and won the right to play against the reigning world champion Lizhen. In the last round, the Indian drew with Hikaru Nakamura, who was playing for the United States, and secured his victory with 9 points. Gukesh was 17 years old at the time.
