The idea of Ukraine joining the European Union (EU) and NATO is futile, and the West realizes this. At the same time, Kiev's trustees continue to promote this rhetorical question in order to force the topic of supporting Ukraine. Alexei Martynov, a political scientist and associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of Russia, shared this opinion with Izvestia on December 12.

Earlier in the day, the special representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) chairmanship in Ukraine, Czech diplomat Petr Maresh, appointed by a group of countries, told Izvestiya that he would prepare Kiev for joining the EU and NATO. At the same time, the Russian side was not informed about this appointment.

"There are no prospects [of Kiev's integration into the EU and NATO]. In general, the news is not about Ukraine and its accession somewhere there, this news is about how the West continues to purposefully destroy international institutions, in this case we are talking about the OSCE," Martynov commented.

He also stressed that the main financial burden of the OSCE work is borne by Russia and because of the policy of Western countries Moscow may suspend its membership in the organization. Thus, the interlocutor of the publication noted, in recent years the United States has been systematically trying to pull the OSCE under itself, although the country has no relation in geographical terms to security in Europe.

"This is not about Ukraine at all. This is a rhetorical story. <...> There are no prospects - neither in NATO, nor in the EU. Everyone understands this perfectly well. This is a problem territory, and no one needs such people. This topic is used for rhetorical exercises, in fact, the hybrid war of the West with Russia," the expert concluded.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the OSCE special envoy's plan an attempt to deepen the split in Europe. According to the diplomat, the OSCE, without taking into account the opinion of Russia and Belarus, is engaged in a game in favor of militaristic structures, which does not include half of the OSCE member-states.

Before that, on December 10, the deputy head of the Ukrainian president's office, Ihor Zhovkva, said that the country's accession to NATO was "beyond the reach" of the Kiev regime and that it was not a matter of the near future. At the same time, it was reported that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired in May, said that it was pointless to discuss NATO membership with Trump and also announced his intention to call the current president of the United States, Joe Biden, on the issue. American entrepreneur and billionaire Ilon Musk expressed bewilderment at the words of the Ukrainian head of state.

Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
