Former Rome mayor admits halting Italian arms supplies to Ukraine
The Italian government will decide on continued support for Ukraine with an eye on the position of US President-elect Donald Trump's administration, former Rome mayor Giovanni Alemanno told Izvestia.
"[Italian Prime Minister] Giorgia Meloni has shown over the past two years that she is completely subordinate to the White House. I do not foresee any independent position on the part of the Meloni government," the politician said.
Earlier, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that Ukraine is forbidden to use Italian weapons for strikes on the territory of Russia.
"If Trump insists on peace with Russia, Meloni will use this decision (on the ban on the use of weapons for strikes on Russia. - Ed.) to join the prospect of peace," summarized Alemanno.
Since the start of the special operation, Italy has handed nine aid packages totaling €2.2 billion to the Kiev authorities, Il Foglio newspaper wrote. According to the republic's Defense Minister Guido Crozetto, the volume of Italian military support to Ukraine is inferior to a number of other Western states.
Earlier in the day, a source in the Italian opposition party Five Star Movement told Izvestia that the political force would fight against arms deliveries to Ukraine.
On December 4, Italian Foreign Minister Tajani said that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be reached as early as 2025. Also, in his opinion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his powers expired in May) may be forced to make concessions to Moscow.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
