The risk of avian flu spreading to humans is an area of special attention in Russia and for the world expert community. Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, said this on December 12, answering a question from Izvestia.

"To date, this is a zone of our special attention and attention of the world expert community, because the number of cases of cross-species transition, different species, including on humans as a biological species - the number of registration of such cases is increasing", - she said.

The head of Rospotrebnadzor noted that the Russian Federation is closely monitoring the situation. According to her, including the preparation of test systems for each new virus that creates pandemic potential. In addition, prototype vaccines have been developed in case of need.

"To date, such a need has not arisen, but once again: we are preparing for any development of the situation," Popova added.

Earlier, on November 11, Rospotrebnadzor reported that in Russia there were no cases of diseases caused by bird flu viruses. Then the agency specified that the situation is under constant control.

On September 27, Russian virologists expressed fears that avian and swine flu can overcome the interspecies barrier, threatening humans. Experts emphasized that citizens can protect themselves from influenza viruses by timely vaccination.
