A member of the German Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany (AdG) party, Andreas Bleck, has addressed the parliament with a question about the awareness of information about Ukraine 's possible plans to develop nuclear weapons. Lenta.Ru got acquainted with his address on December 12.

"Is the federal government aware of the plans mentioned in media reports to create nuclear weapons in Ukraine?" - the edition quotes a question from his address.

In response, the government said it had no information on the matter.

"The federal government does not have any knowledge in the sense of the issue at hand," Federal Foreign Ministry parliamentary state secretary Susanne Baumann said.

She added that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regularly notifies the monitoring of the nuclear safety situation as well as the verification of compliance with its measures agreed between the IAEA and Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired on May 20, said during his visit to the United States in October when speaking with Republican presidential victor Donald Trump that Kiev must either possess nuclear weapons or become a NATO member to win the current conflict. Zelensky himself later ruled out ever talking about Ukraine building this type of weapon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin approved an updated nuclear doctrine on November 19. It includes the amendments announced in September. In particular, it introduces for the first time a definition of a potential adversary against whom Russia is conducting nuclear deterrence. The next day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that the update of Russia's nuclear doctrine should be considered a certain signal to unfriendly countries.

On November 22, the head of the Russian Security Council's commission on information policy, Aleksey Pushkov, said that the USA would not transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine. In his opinion, this can happen only if everyone in the USA finally "goes crazy". He also emphasized that the transfer of this type of weapons to Kiev would drag the West into the "nuclear underworld".

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
