Court in Romania rejects appeal against annulment of first round election results

The Supreme Court of Cassation of Romania (SCR) has rejected the appeal of the leader of the far-right party Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), MP George Simion against the decision of the Constitutional Court (CCR) to annul the results of the first round of the presidential election. This was reported by Realitatea TV channel on December 12, citing the CCS decision.
"The Supreme Court of Cassation rejected the appeal of George Simion and AUR against the annulment of the presidential election," the material said.
Simion and AUR party lawyer Gheorghe Piperea criticized the decision of the CCS of Romania in comments to the TV channel.
According to the lawyer, the court had an opportunity to restore the hope of Romanian citizens for a fair electoral process, free elections and democracy, writes "Gazeta.Ru". He also expressed regret because of the strong politicization of the judicial system in the Republic.
Earlier, December 6, it was reported that the Constitutional Court (CC) of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. It was specified that the final decision was made after the court session held that day. In the near future, the government should approve new dates for the voting. At the same time, the presidential candidate and winner of the first round of elections Calin Georgescu called the CC decision an undermining of democracy and an "official coup d'état".
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24. According to official data, independent candidate Georgescu was leading with 22.94% of the vote. The leader of the opposition party "Union for the Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi has 19.17% of the votes. George Simion came fourth with 14.17% of the vote. The second round was to be held on December 8, as none of the candidates could get more than 50%.
On November 28, the Romanian CC demanded that the Central Election Commission (CEC) recalculate the results of the first round. On November 29, the head of the Romanian CEC Tony Grebla said that if the Constitutional Court overturned the results of the first round, it could be held again on December 15. In this case, the second round of elections will have to be held on December 29.
On December 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin ridiculed the recount of votes in the Romanian elections. According to him, the authorities decided to take such a step only because they did not like the candidate who won the first round.
