Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed hope on December 11 during the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence AI Journey 2024 in Moscow that artificial intelligence will make it possible to refuse antibiotics in medicine.

According to the head of state, AI in relation to the possibilities of medicine is based on the speed of analyzing big data obtained and researched in relation to a particular patient. He noted that specialists need to realize that artificial intelligence will help in early diagnosis, which will then help in treatment and prevention of severe consequences after diseases.

The Russian leader pointed out that at the moment it is possible to use antibiotics in medicine due to accelerated processing of research directions and necessary materials.

"It would be better if, with the help of AI, we were once able to abandon antibiotics altogether. Although, probably, we cannot do without it for now, but it is quite possible to move in this direction with the help of artificial intelligence," Putin said.

The Russian President noted the importance of these studies. In his opinion, it is possible to use genotechnology, genetic engineering capabilities with the help of AI, which can lead to "fantastic results." In addition, the Russian leader added that the Russian Federation needs to create a nationwide digital profile in the field of medicine.

"But this is all a matter for the future, but in general, laying such bricks in the foundation of our healthcare should, of course, be done now. I hope it will be so," the head of state added.

During the same speech, the Russian leader noted that it is very important for Russia's sovereignty to have its own AI developments. He explained that he mentioned worldview sovereignty for the reason that the principle of AI operation is laid down by people who act on the basis of their values, culture, language, images, understanding of history, national peculiarities and interests.

Earlier, on December 2, leading researcher of the AIRI Institute, chairman of the board of directors of SberMedII, PhD in medical sciences, radiologist Viktor Gombolevsky told Izvestia that AI is actively used in medicine and helps to detect diseases at early stages. At the same time, he specified that the technology remains an auxiliary tool for doctors, as it requires human control and expert evaluation.

AI is capable of processing and analyzing large amounts of data, identifying patterns and suggesting possible diagnoses or treatments, but important aspects, such as individual patient characteristics, the context of the clinical situation and emotional support, require the involvement of an experienced doctor.
