Putin said artificial intelligence should not replace teachers

Artificial intelligence (AI) should not replace teachers, but can complement them. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this on December 11 at the AI Journey 2024 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Moscow.
"You said that artificial intelligence should not replace teachers, it should complement them - I completely agree with this. Probably there will come some point sometime, maybe quite soon, when indeed this line will also be erased," the Russian leader said, responding to a question from Aakash Guglani of the New Delhi-based Digital India Foundation, a non-profit foundation.
The Russian president reminded that as of today, formulating capabilities and tasks for AI is done by humans. He emphasized that only a teacher can interest a student in gaining knowledge.
In addition, Putin noted the importance of personal data sovereignty. According to him, the work in the field of application of artificial intelligence in education cannot be entrusted "at the mercy" of large private companies.
At the same event, Putin commented on the AI processing of appeals sent by citizens to the direct line. He said that thanks to the work of the GigaChat service, it is possible to see the most popular topics of Russians' appeals. This is the first experience of using AI for the direct line.
Putin also said that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies open up new opportunities in a number of areas. The Western restrictions imposed on Russia are in turn pushing Russia to develop AI.
