December 21 - the day of the winter solstice in 2024

At the winter solstice, or Solstice, the luminary takes the lowest point relative to the horizon of the Earth and as if frozen in the zenith. Due to this phenomenon, the phenomenon got its name. It can be observed on different days depending on the year.

In a normal year, the event occurs on December 22, and in leap year, which is the outgoing year 2024, will happen a day earlier - on Saturday, December 21. In the Southern Hemisphere at this time will come astronomical summer, and in the Northern Hemisphere - astronomical winter, which will last until the vernal equinox, that is, until the end of March. At the same time behind the polar circle there will come polar night.

On the rest of the territory the daylight hours will last seven hours. It will be the shortest day of the year, which will be replaced by the longest night. Therefore, most of the day will be dark. However, in the olden days they were not sad about it, but celebrated and partied merrily.
