- Political analyst explains Trump's attention to Ukraine by his attempt to look like a peacemaker

US President-elect Donald Trump is paying increased attention to the conflict in Ukraine, as he intends to look like a peacemaker and "emerge victorious" in any development of the situation. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on December 11 by Nikita Danyuk, deputy director of the PFUR Institute for Strategic Studies and Forecasts and a member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
The day before, the American leader noted in an interview with the French magazine Paris Match that there are many crises in the world now, but the issue of Ukraine remains a priority. He emphasized that the Middle East conflict is important, but it is easier to solve than the Ukrainian conflict.
"Trump is devoting a lot of time to this issue because it is one of the main narratives of his election campaign - reducing support for Ukraine. Moreover, he is positioning himself as a peacemaker politician, meaning it is very important for him to demonstrate this result. Therefore, he is already creating an information background," Danyuk commented.
Thus, noted the interlocutor of the publication, Trump is already trying to exert a certain pressure on Ukraine - this is clear after his meetings with the President of the country Vladimir Zelensky, whose powers expired in May - and on Russia, in that he already allegedly has some plan to freeze the conflict, which does not correspond to the interests of Moscow.
"Trump will create the right information background to make himself look like a peacemaker and a winner in any situation. Whether it is a scenario of stopping the conflict [in Ukraine], whether it is a situation with the continuation of the conflict, in which Trump will still show himself as a winner," the Americanist summarized.
Earlier in the day, Reuters reported that Trump told Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris that he wanted a ceasefire and negotiations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, commenting on this, said that if the president-elect's administration is serious about resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is ready to consider the proposals.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recalled on December 8 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had repeatedly said that Russia was open for talks on Ukraine and welcomed proposals from China, India, Brazil and other countries.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
