Putin cited Western restrictions as a driver of AI development in Russia

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies open up new opportunities in a number of areas. The Western restrictions imposed on Russia, in turn, are pushing it to develop AI. Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the AI Journey 2024 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Moscow on December 11.
"AI now understands, analyzes, even hard-to-read images and videos despite weather conditions and other interference, which opens up qualitatively different opportunities for robotics, for creating unmanned vehicles on the ground, in the air and in the water environment," the Russian leader said.
In addition, he noted that the restrictions imposed on Russia by Western countries are pushing the country to develop in the field of artificial intelligence.
Putin emphasized that Russian companies are keeping up with the latest technological solutions by introducing new services based on artificial intelligence.
The Russian president also said that over the past year, AI technologies have had a positive impact on a multitude of areas. According to him, this means a "coming revolution" in engineering, in design, in the construction of fundamentally new components and entire devices.
At the same time, Putin commented on the AI processing of appeals sent by citizens to the direct line. He said that thanks to the work of the GigaChat service, it is possible to see the most popular topics of Russians' appeals. This is the first experience of using AI for a direct line.
