Russian swimmer Kirill Prigoda December 11 updated the national record in the 100m breaststroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest from December 10-15.
Prigoda clocked 55.82 seconds in the preliminary heat.
Thus, the athlete qualified for the semifinals of the competition from the first place. Russia's Alexander Zhigalov, who took eighth place in the qualification (56.90), also qualified for the semifinals.
The semifinal heats of the 100m breaststroke will be held in the evening on December 11.
The previous short course record, set on November 22 at the St. Petersburg competition (55.95), also belongs to Prigoda.
Kirill Prigoda is a three-time bronze medalist at the World Championships (2017, 2019) and silver medalist at the European Championships (2021), a four-time World Cup winner and two-time winner of the European Short Course Swimming Championships.
Earlier, on November 1, French swimmer Leon Marchand set a world record in the 200 m short course at the World Cup in Singapore. The athlete swam the distance in 1 minute 48.88 seconds. The previous record, which was held for 12 years, was set in Istanbul by American Ryan Lochte. His result was 1 minute 49.63 seconds.
