Chairman of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice Alexander Khizhnyak submitted documents to register himself as a candidate for president of Belarus. This was reported by the press service of the Central Election Commission of the Republic on Wednesday, December 11.

"The CEC of Belarus has submitted documents for the registration of Alexander Khizhnyak as a candidate for President of the Republic of Belarus," reads the message in the Telegram-channel.

Registration of presidential candidates in Belarus will be held from December 22 to December 31, 2024. The election campaign will be held from January 1 to January 25, 2025.

Presidential elections in the republic are scheduled for January 26, 2025.

Earlier, November 14, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that a woman could become president of Belarus in the future, but not now. He suggested that in time the country might be ready for a woman president, "for such a style," but so far it's not.

Prior to that, on October 23, Lukashenko announced his intention to run for president.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 24 that Russia would support the candidacy of the incumbent Belarusian leader. Peskov emphasized Lukashenko's value in the development of Belarus as a sovereign state and ally of Russia. He also pointed to the special friendly relations of Russian President Vladimir Putin with his Belarusian counterpart.
