The Chamber of the Regional Administrative Court in Vilnius failed to declare on December 10 whether figure skater Margarita Drobiazko was justifiably deprived of Lithuanian citizenship and decided to appeal to the Constitutional Court.

"The question arose as to whether the provision of the Law on Citizenship, which establishes special grounds for loss of citizenship only for a part of persons with dual citizenship, complies with the principle of equality. Why only those who have a certain peculiarity - obtaining citizenship by way of exception - fall into this sphere of regulation. And others with multiple citizenship are not subject to regulation," Delfi.lt quotes Judge Gediminas Užubalis, who announced the decision.

According to him, the reason for deprivation of citizenship was given as "expressed support for a hostile state." Užubalis also said that there were two grounds on which the measure could be implemented: "threat to national security" and "public support for another state."

The judge stated that deprivation of citizenship is a severe punishment. It is reported that the case will be suspended until the explanation of the Constitutional Court is received.

On November 13, the Lithuanian Interior Ministry obliged the Migration Department to start the procedure for the loss of Lithuanian citizenship by ballerina Ilze Liepa. The reason was Liepa's words, said a year ago during an interview with the Russian YouTube channel "Empathy Manucci". The ballerina supported Russia's special operation in Ukraine and added that she has no doubts about what Russian President Vladimir Putin says. It is noted that she has both Russian and Lithuanian citizenship.

Earlier, on September 15, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda signed a decree stripping figure skater Margarita Drobyazko of her Lithuanian citizenship, which was granted to her as an exception in 1993. Announcing his intention to revoke her citizenship, Nauseda said that people who "want to bring the light of culture and goodness in the skin of the aggressor should continue to do so without citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania".
