- An expert explained the procedure to be followed in case of missing funds from a bank account

If the amount of money in a bank account has decreased, the first thing to do is to find out how the loss of funds occurred. To do this, you can use the bank's mobile application, order an account statement or contact the support service, said Nikita Bliss, head of information security at Sravni. He explained to Izvestia on December 11 what to do in case of missing money.
Among the possible reasons for the write-off of funds, he named a technical error. Such errors can occur when depositing or withdrawing cash at an ATM, as well as when paying for goods and services. For example, if the amount of payment was incorrectly specified or the operation was duplicated, the expert noted.
"Another case is an acceptance-free payment. These are payments that do not require your confirmation. They include write-offs for enforcement proceedings, loan payments, subscriptions to online services and purchases on marketplaces, if you have saved your card details," Bliss clarified.
In addition, money can disappear due to fraudulent actions. This could be a payment transaction made after the theft of a bank card, online banking access details or a website where a bank card was previously saved.
"Once you have identified the reason for the debit, the appropriate steps should be taken. If it is a technical error or unauthorized subscription, you can dispute the transaction through the bank or ask the merchant to correct the error. In case of refusal, you have the opportunity to use the procedure of chargecheck - this is the process of disputing a payment with which you do not agree. According to the regulations of the Mir payment system, you can challenge any payment within 360 days from the date of its execution," the expert said.
If the user discovered a transaction that he did not make, he should immediately contact the bank's support. Bliss recommended changing the password to access the banking app and reissuing the card to prevent further debits.
"In most cases, the bank is obliged to return the money if you can prove that you did not pass the card to third parties and did not share its details," concluded the head of information security at Compare.
Earlier, on December 9, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (CBR) reported that banks in the third quarter of 2024 protected customers from 16.1 million attacks by network fraudsters, preventing them from stealing 4.9 trillion rubles. At the same time, fraudsters managed to steal Br9.3 billion in July-September. Slightly more than 40% of the crimes involved transfers and online banking, unlike earlier periods when theft of funds occurred mainly in card transactions.
