Other evaluation methods provide only a limited understanding of the product and may mislead consumers. This was stated by Victor Torosyan, chief technologist of UPEC (United Petrochemicals), Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported on December 10.
"For example, evaluating oil by color will not help distinguish a fake - base oil is transparent, the shade is given to it by the additive package, which may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Another ineffective method is "analysis" by smell. Some companies add fragrances that give this or that "flavor", but the difference in the nuances of odor between different oils does not indicate that one of the products is fake," Torosyan explained.
In addition, according to the expert, checking oil viscosity with the assessment of its fluidity at ambient temperature is not informative, because fluidity strongly depends on the measurement temperature and viscosity index.
As the expert noted, the level of counterfeit products of many foreign brands after their departure from Russia has increased significantly. At the same time, domestic and localized motor oils of manufacturers officially operating in Russia show high quality and compliance with the stated characteristics.
