Kremlin calls Assad's resignation as Syrian president a personal decision


Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, December 10, called Bashar al-Assad's resignation as Syrian president his personal decision.
"Leaving the process of performing the duties of the head of state was Assad's personal decision," Peskov said at a briefing.
He also noted that Russia continues dialog with the countries of the region, adding that there is wide-ranging cooperation with a number of states. According to Peskov, these processes intend to continue.
On December 8, it became known that Assad, along with his family, is in Moscow. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, he resigned as head of state.
After the announcement of his resignation from the post of President Assad instructed to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. The coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria said to work on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, the Prime Minister of the SAR Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.
Against this backdrop, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the termination of the demarcation agreement with Syria, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deployed forces along the Syrian border under the pretext of ensuring the security of communities in the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens.
The situation in Syria escalated following a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib that began on November 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
