Italy pauses consideration of asylum requests from Syrians

Italy has suspended consideration of asylum requests from Syrians. This was stated on Monday, December 9, in a statement by the leadership of the Italian Council of Ministers following a government meeting on the situation in Syria.
According to Reuters, Italy emphasized that similar steps have been taken by other European Union (EU) countries.
"The government has decided, like other European partners, to suspend the processing of asylum applications from Syria," the statement said.
Other European countries, including Germany, have suspended asylum applications from Syrians until further notice, while France said it hoped to announce a similar decision soon.
Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said Russia would do everything possible to achieve sustainable and long-term peace in the Middle East.
On the eve, December 8, the Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, decided to leave the post of head of state and leave the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Russia is in contact with the Syrian opposition and is taking measures for the safety of its citizens. It was later confirmed that Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow.
On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria said it was working on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, SAR Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the Syrian government ministers remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.
The situation in Syria has escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
