Poland's Foreign Ministry says Duda can keep Trump from withdrawing from NATO


Polish President Andrzej Duda may keep newly elected US Republican President Donald Trump from withdrawing from NATO. This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on December 9.
On the eve ofTrump allowed the possibility of the country's withdrawal from the North Atlantic Alliance. The politician noted that if NATO will "pay the bills", the US will remain in the membership. In addition, he emphasized that the fulfillment of financial obligations by allies will be a key condition for Washington's further participation in the alliance.
"I assume that there is an intensive dialogue between our President Andrzej Duda and President-elect (Trump. - Ed.) <...>So I hope that he will not allow any bad interpretations of these words to be realized," Sikorski was quoted by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, on November 4, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the alliance would work with any US president-elect. After information about Trump's victory, he said that the latter was right to require NATO members to spend more than 2% of GDP on defense, and promised that this will happen in the future.
Before that, in July, Politico wrote that the Republican politician, if re-elected, does not plan to withdraw the country from NATO, but could go for major changes to Washington's role in the alliance. It was reported that he may propose a two-tiered system of the alliance with a reduction in U.S. authority in the security sphere.
