Syria is a region where the geopolitical interests of many countries are intertwined, and the involvement of Western forces, including the United States, is evident in the current situation in the country. Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an American political scientist, pointed this out in a conversation with Izvestia on December 9.

The day before, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Washington intends to prosecute parties that supported former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as well as influential government officials.

"This is their classic tactic and tradition of the US cracking down on its political opponents. <...> It was not possible to physically eliminate Assad, it is clear that they will mop up his entourage," Blokhin commented.

He also noted that Syria is a geopolitical tangle, but now the Western influence on the situation is especially noticeable. The task of Western forces is to open another front against the Russian Federation, to try to disperse its attention between Syria and Ukraine. However, the interlocutor emphasized, the Ukrainian issue remains a priority for Russia.

On the eve of the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of the head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully.

On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria said it was working on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.

Against this backdrop, the IDF announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of communities in the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.

The situation in Syria has escalated following a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib that began on November 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
