- Political analyst pointed to Zelensky's desire to get a public denial of admission to NATO

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose powers expired in May, realizes that the country will not be admitted to NATO and wants to receive a public rejection in order to absolve himself of responsibility. This assumption was made by Pavlo Feldman, a candidate of political sciences and associate professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, in a conversation with Izvestiya on 9 December.
Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian leader said that he intended to talk to incumbent US President Joe Biden to invite Ukraine to NATO. According to him, there is "no point" in discussing this with President-elect Donald Trump.
"The Ukrainian president is unlikely to seriously expect an invitation to NATO. Most likely, he wants Joe Biden to publicly declare the impossibility of Ukraine's admission to the North Atlantic Alliance. Zelensky is literally forcing the outgoing head of the White House to put the final point in this multi-year tragicomedy," Feldman commented.
He explained that if a public refusal is received from Washington, the Kiev regime will absolve itself of responsibility for the failure of the so-called victory plan. Thus, the interlocutor of the publication drew attention to the fact that Western partners are frankly delaying the final decision, while Ukraine is paying a high price for its North Atlantic illusions.
"Probably European leaders and American politicians have informally told Zelensky many times that they cannot accept a warring country with a rotten system of government into their defense alliance," he added.
The expert suggested that after the refusal, Zelensky may demand official security guarantees from his American patrons. Ukraine, Feldman believes, will insist on being granted the status of a U.S. ally outside NATO, similar to Israel or South Korea. However, the political analyst concluded that the Kiev regime will be disappointed here as well.
On the eve it was reported that the Trump team did not support the proposal of the head of Zelensky's office Andrei Yermak on the return of the country to the borders of 2022 and joining NATO. The Wall Street Journal also wrote on December 4 that the Republican's associates did not show interest in the idea of the country joining the North Atlantic Alliance.
Before that, on November 29, Zelensky said in an interview with the British TV channel Sky News that he might agree to a cease-fire and give up some territories in exchange for Ukraine's membership in NATO. In his turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov said that Ukraine's NATO membership was unacceptable for Russia because it was a threatening development.
Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
