Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term expired on May 20) said on December 9 that he plans to call incumbent US President Joe Biden to discuss the possibility of inviting his country to NATO.

"I am going, by the way, to call President Biden soon, if he has such an opportunity to talk to me, and raise the issue of an invitation to NATO, because he is now the acting US president and a lot depends on his position," UNIAN quoted Zelensky as saying at a meeting in Kiev with Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the post of German chancellor and head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

According to the head of the Kiev regime, Kiev needs security guarantees in the form of an invitation to NATO already now. At the same time, Zelensky expressed the opinion that it makes "no sense" to discuss them with American President-elect Donald Trump now, because nothing depends on the Republican in this area yet.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that he was developing a concept for ending the conflict in Ukraine. In his opinion, the time has come for negotiations. The politician also made claims that the next White House administration may reduce the amount of military aid to Ukraine.

On the eve it was reported that the Trump team did not support the proposal of the head of Zelensky's office Andrei Yermak on the return of the country to the borders of 2022 and joining NATO. The Wall Street Journal also wrote on December 4 that the Republican's associates showed no interest in the idea of the country joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
