- A homemade flag on the consulate in St. Petersburg could have been hung by local Syrians

A homemade flag on the building where the honorary consul of Syria is located in St. Petersburg could have been hung by Syrians living in the city, it was done without the knowledge of the diplomats. This was reported to "Izvestia" on December 9 by the honorary consul Malaz Ghazi himself.
"This flag was hung, most likely, by Syrian guys without our knowledge, and we will not touch it yet," he reported.
Ghazi added that there were no instructions from Damascus to replace the flag. The honorary consul assessed the situation in Syria as worrisome.
"Let's hope that Syria is for everyone and that everything will be fine," he concluded.
The day before, on December 8, a homemade flag resembling the banner used by the Syrian opposition appeared on the building where the honorary consul is located. On the same day, the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) was removed from the building of the country's embassy in Moscow. Later, on December 9, an opposition banner was hoisted on a flagpole there.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 8 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held talks with representatives of the opposition, decided to resign as head of state and left the SAR, leaving instructions to transfer power peacefully. The Russian Federation, in turn, is in contact with the opposition and is working to ensure the safety of Russians in the country.
At the same time, Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it was working to establish a "transitional governing body". SAR Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali indicated that he was ready to work with any elected leadership and most of the republic's ministers remained in Damascus.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
