Academician Velikhov was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow

Academician, scientist in the field of thermonuclear fusion Yevgeny Velikhov was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. This was reported by the correspondent of "Izvestia" on December 9.

The funeral was attended by President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk, director of the NRC Marat Kambolov, as well as vice-presidents of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Vladislav Panchenko and Sergei Aldoshin.

In addition, other academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shipbuilders and submarine sailors came to bid farewell to Velikhov.

At the funeral there was a funeral service according to the Orthodox rite. Velikhov was buried with military honors next to the graves of former head of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov, polar explorer and Russian scientist-geographer Artur Chilingarov and actress Vera Vasilieva.

Earlier in the day in the capital's House of Scientists named after Alexandrov SIC "Kurchatov Institute" held a farewell ceremony for the scientist.

The death of Velikhov became known on December 5. The outstanding expert in the field of thermonuclear fusion died at the 90th year of life. Commenting on this, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" Academician Vladislav Panchenko noted that Velikhov was a great man who could think broadly and was passionate about his work.

President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk said on December 6 that the academician's scientific activity had a civilizational scale. In addition, he also noted Velikhov's contribution to the emergence of the Internet in Russia.

Velikhov was the scientific director of research on controlled thermonuclear fusion in the USSR. In 1977-1996, he served as vice-president of the USSR Academy of Sciences and then of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In addition, Velikhov is a participant in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, Hero of Socialist Labor, Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation and the holder of many other state awards.
