Naryshkin reported on talks on the safety of Russians in Syria

The main task facing the Russian Federation is to ensure the security of Russians and embassy staff in Damascus, and negotiations are under way on this topic. The head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergei Naryshkin, told reporters on December 9.
"Of course, we are conducting negotiations that concern first of all the security of our citizens, embassy staff, other missions of our country. This is now the main task - to ensure the safety of our people," Naryshkin said.
Earlier in the day, Syrian Consul to Russia Zager Al-Ahmar told Izvestia that there is no threat to Russian military bases in the country. The diplomat added that Syria has now become a new state, but contacts between Damascus and Moscow will not stop.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 8 that President of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) Bashar al-Assad held talks with the opposition, after which he decided to leave the post of head of state and leave the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Russia, in turn, maintains contacts with the Syrian opposition and works to ensure the safety of its citizens.
On the same day, Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it had begun work on establishing a "transitional governing body." SAR Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers remained in Damascus, and he himself was ready to work with any leadership that would be chosen.
The situation in Syria has escalated as a result of a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
