In Moscow, surgeons sewed five fingers back on to a man after he was injured at work

In Moscow, specialists of the Center for Microsurgery of the Hand of the A.K. Yeramishantsev City Clinical Hospital (CCH) conducted an operation to save a man's hand, having sewn all five fingers, previously amputated as a result of an injury at work. This was reported on December 9 by the Department of Health of the capital in the official group in "VKontakte".

"For the first time during the work of the Center of microsurgery of the hand of the A.K. Yeramishantsev State Clinical Hospital, doctors-microsurgeons sewed five fingers during one operation", - stated in the publication.

The patient was a 62-year-old man who had received amputation of all his fingers as a result of an injury at work. A week after the procedure, he was discharged from the hospital.

To save the fingers, bone osteosynthesis with spokes was performed to fix the position of the amputated fingers, and the tendons of the finger flexors and extensors were sewn together. At the microsurgical stage, the veins and arteries providing blood inflow and outflow in the fingers were sewn together and the finger nerves were restored to restore their sensitivity.

As noted by the department, all the fingers have fully engrafted without any complications. However, the patient will be rehabilitating for several months, consulting with doctors on the process of further restoring hand function.

The hand preservation surgery lasted 14 hours and was the first time in the center's history that a patient needed to restore five fingers at once.
