Russia will do everything possible to achieve sustainable and long-term peace in the Middle East, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said on December 9.

"We will do everything in our power to achieve sustainable and long-term peace," he told RIA Novosti on the sidelines of the XV Asian Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Malaysia.

Russia and Malaysia are in favor of a peaceful settlement of the Middle East crisis, the diplomat emphasized. In particular, he pointed out that both sides support the existence of Palestine independent from Israel.

On the eve, December 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as a result of negotiations with the opposition, decided to leave the post of the head of state and leave the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Russia is in contact with the Syrian opposition and is taking measures for the safety of its citizens. It was later confirmed that Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow.

These events were the result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.

At the same time, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip remains unresolved in the Middle East. Ahmed Abdel Hadi, a representative of the Palestinian movement, told Izvestia that they are studying the Egyptian proposal on ceasefire and hostage exchange and are ready to show flexibility in some points of the deal.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas subjected Israeli territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
