The World Health Organization (WHO) intends to continue working on the territory of Syria amid the worsening situation in the country. The organization's Director General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus said on December 8.

"WHO teams based in Syria remain on the ground and are working to ensure the continuity of health care. We remain steadfast in our commitment to the long-suffering people of Syria who need access to health services," he wrote on social network X (formerly Twitter).

Ghebreyesus also noted the need to protect health workers, facilities, transportation and supplies in Syria. The WHO chief called on all parties to comply with this requirement of the organization.

"We also call on donors to urgently provide resources to WHO and its partners so that we can all fulfill our mission to save lives," he added.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Syrian formations took control of Seidnaya prison in the suburbs of Damascus. They released all the prisoners. Opposition forces also stormed the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

It also became known that former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow with his family. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, he resigned as head of state.

AFP news agency reported on December 8 about the fire in the presidential palace of Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. And the National Coalition of Revolutionary and Opposition Forces of Syria said it was working to form a "transitional governing body."

Meanwhile, SAR Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said most of the Syrian government ministers remain in Damascus. He emphasized that he is ready to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people.

On November 29, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi called the opposition activation part of the US plan amid Israel's defeat in Lebanon. The White House denied its involvement in the events.

A day earlier it was reported that armed formations launched a major attack in Aleppo and Idlib, and the Syrian army began to repel it, causing serious damage to equipment and manpower of militants.
