Siberian scientists have invented the newest material for implants


Novosibirsk scientists were the first in the world to invent a super light carbide composite with through porosity for implants. It is noted that scientists all over the world have been working for many years on obtaining bioinert superstrong material for oncoprosthetics. Previously, various composites were created on the basis of tantalum, zirconium dioxide, aluminum oxide, nitinol, cobaltchromium and titanium. However, the materials either gave shrinkage or lacked end-to-end porosity.
Now the material created by scientists from Russia, which has no analogues in the world, will be able to supplant titanium in oncoprosthetics of bones. Russian bioengineers took pure boron carbide as the basis of the composite. It is one of the most chemically inert, resistant and strong compounds. At the same time, boron carbide is not dissolved by acids, does not corrode, does not succumb to biological and mechanical effects.
"For the first time, the idea to make a universal material that will be used in different industries, including medical. Such a material has been created. It is a composite, based on a ceramic matrix. It was achieved to create a very light and durable material, which is non-toxic and has through porosity," Khakhalkin specified and added that the strength of the material is close to the strength of bone. Thus, the material can be used to create bone implants.
At the same time, boron carbide composite allows to make implants that will not give restrictions on MRI diagnostics in the patient in the future, unlike titanium implants.

Among the promising developments is a method of spine stabilization in degenerative diseases, thanks to which patients are more quickly rehabilitated and return to normal life. Specialists of the Moscow Spinal Center of L.A. Vorokhobov State Clinical Hospital No. 67 are working on the project, as well as the development of an implant for prosthetics of the spinal support function made of medical titanium and high-strength polymer domestic material PEEK.
