Pushkov admits canceling Romania's election because of an inconvenient favorite

Cancellation of elections in Romania may occur due to high chances of victory of the inconvenient for the authorities of the country candidate Calin Georgescu. This was reported on December 7 by the head of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Commission on Information Policy Alexei Pushkov.

"Data from the Romanian sociological service Sociopol from December 3-4. If this poll is to be believed, 63% of voters are in favor of Calin Georgescu, while only 37% are in favor of his rival - an EU protégé," Pushkov said in a statement on his Telegram channel.

He specified that provided that these data are correct, then the decision to cancel the election results by Romania's Constitutional Court will not yield results because the gap is too large.

"But Georgescu's enemies also have non-electoral methods in reserve. For example, to cancel the elections as such," - concluded Pushkov.

Earlier, on December 6, it was reported that the Constitutional Court (CC) of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. It was specified that the final decision was made following the court session held on that day. In the near future, the government should approve new dates for the voting.

On the same day, presidential candidate Calin Georgescu said that the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania to annul the results of the first round of elections is an undermining of democracy and an "official coup d'état".

At the same time, political scientist, associate professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Foreign Policy of the Russian State University Vadym Trukhachev told Izvestia that the victory of independent candidate Calin Geor gescu in the first round of the presidential election in Romania was not favorable to the West because he would not help Ukraine to the detriment of his country.

After that, the chairman of the opposition Moldovan Victory bloc Ilan Shor said that democracy in Romania was dead after the annulment of the results of the first round of the election.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu was leading with 22.94% of the vote. The leader of the opposition party "Union for the Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi has 19.17% of the votes. The second round was to be held on December 8, as none of the candidates could get more than 50%.

On November 28, the Constitutional Court of Romania demanded from the Central Election Commission (CEC) to recalculate the results of the first round. On November 29, the head of the Romanian CEC Tony Grebla said that if the Constitutional Court annuls the results of the first round, it could be held again on December 15. In this case, the second round of elections will have to be held on December 29, which causes a lot of inconvenience, he said.

On December 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin ridiculed the recount of votes in the Romanian elections. According to him, the authorities decided to take such a step only because they did not like the candidate who won the first round.
