- South Korea's parliament fails to get the required number of votes to impeach the president

The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea failed to get the required number of votes to impeach President Yun Seok-yol. This was reported by Yonhap News Agency on December 7.
It is specified that 200 deputy votes were needed to declare impeachment, and only 195 people voted.
Some deputies boycotted the vote.
Earlier in the day it was reported that in Seoul's Yoido district about 149,000 protesters gathered near the National Assembly building demanding a decision on the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol.
Also on Saturday, Yun Seok-yol apologized to fellow citizens during a public address due to the imposition of martial law in the country. The South Korean leader promised not to re-impose it.
Yun Seok-yol declared martial law in the country on December 3. The reason for such a step he called the threat of paralysis of power, arising from attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. Commander of the emergency regime, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn-soo noted that until martial law is lifted in the republic, the activities of parliament, political parties and associations are prohibited. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul.
The opposition party of the republic, in turn, demanded the resignation of the head of state and said it intended to charge Yoon Seok-yeol with treason. At the same time, all heads and senior secretaries of the presidential administration of South Korea resigned. In addition, the trade unions of the republic announced a general strike.
