Lee Jae-myung, chairman of South Korea's leading opposition Toburo Democratic Party, said for the umpteenth time on Dec. 7 that the country's President Yun Seok-yol should resign or be removed from power through impeachment.

"There is no other way to resolve this situation except for the immediate resignation of the president or early termination of power through impeachment," Yonhap News Agency quoted him as saying.

The South Korean opposition leader noted that Yun Seok-yeol's address to the nation did not meet the expectations of fellow citizens, but instead "further increased the sense of betrayal and anger."

Earlier in the day, South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol apologized to fellow citizens during a public address due to the imposition of martial law in the country. He also added that the declaration of martial law was due to desperation.

Daria Kurginova, an expert of the Polylog Group and political scientist, told Izvestia on December 5 that South Korea has deposed and condemned heads of state more than once, and such an option is likely for incumbent President Yun Seok-yol. According to her, the post of president could be occupied by Lee Jae Myung, who was Yoon Seok-yol's main rival in the 2022 presidential election.

Korean President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law in the country on Dec. 3. He cited the threat of power paralysis caused by attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings as the reason for the move. Commander of the emergency regime, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn-soo noted that until martial law is lifted in the republic, the activities of parliament, political parties and associations are prohibited. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul, the country's capital.

The opposition party of the republic, in turn, demanded the resignation of the head of state and said it intended to charge Yoon Seok-yeol with treason. At the same time, all heads and senior secretaries of the presidential administration of South Korea resigned. In addition, labor unions of the republic announced a general strike. The country's Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, in turn, submitted his resignation.

Later, the South Korean police began an investigation of the President on suspicion of rebellion because of his decision to impose martial law in the country. It was noted that the investigation began after complaints from opposition politicians about the actions of the head of state.
