Internet encyclopedia "Wikipedia" published false data on the place of death of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Evgeny Velikhov and does not allow to make corrections to the article about the Russian scientist. This was stated on December 6 by the president of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk.

Kovalchuk reminded that in "Wikipedia" anyone can write what he wants. Thus, in an article about Velikhov, information appeared that the scientist died allegedly in the Turkish city of Mersin, not in Moscow.

"I asked that our respective [staff] press services correct that this is not true. He died in Moscow, he was not in Turkey, this is not true. They corrected it, and a minute later it is corrected back. They corrected it once again, two or three times, they still correct it back," said Kovalchuk at the briefing.

At the same time, the president of the Kurchatov Institute noted that the link to the source, which mentions the Turkish city, leads to the page of Radio Liberty (included in the Russian Federation in the register of foreign media agents).

Kovalchuk called on the relevant authorities of the Russian Federation to pay attention to the dissemination of false information by "Wikipedia".

Velikhov's death became known in the evening of December 5. He passed away at the 90th year of life. Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of SIC "Kurchatov Institute", Academician Vladislav Panchenko called Velikhov was a great man who could think broadly and was passionate about his work. Kovalchuk said on December 6 that the academician's scientific activity had a civilizational scale.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to Velikhov's family and friends, calling him an innovator and a man of inexhaustible creative energy.

Velikhov was the scientific director of research on controlled thermonuclear fusion in the USSR, as well as one of the leaders of the international project to develop thermonuclear energy ITER.
