On December 6, the Constitutional Court (CC) of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. This was reported on December 6 by Romanian TV channel Digi24, citing official sources.

"The Constitutional Court ruled on Friday to cancel the first round of the presidential election. This means that the entire electoral process will resume in full," the report said.

Later, the court posted an official message on its page in the social network Facebook (owned by the organization Meta, recognized as extremist in Russia).

It was specified that the final decision was made after the court session held on that day. In the near future, the government should approve new dates for the voting.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu is leading with 22.94% of votes. The leader of the opposition party "Union of Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi has 19.17% of votes. The second round was to be held on December 8, as none of the candidates could get more than 50%.

On November 28, the Constitutional Court of Romania demanded that the Central Election Commission (CEC) recalculate the results of the first round. On November 29, the head of the Romanian CEC Tony Grebla said that if the Constitutional Court annuls the results of the first round, it could be held again on December 15. In this case, the second round of elections will have to be held on December 29, which causes a lot of inconvenience, he said.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin ridiculed the recount of votes in the Romanian elections. According to him, the authorities decided to take such a step only because they did not like the candidate who won in the first round.

On December 2, independent candidate for the Romanian presidency Georgescu said that if he wins the election, he will follow the decisions of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on the peace agreement in Ukraine. At the same time, the U.S. State Department warned that Romania's possible abandonment of its pro-Western course as a result of the presidential election in the country could lead to a reduction in investments.
