German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Thursday, December 5, did not rule out the possibility of sending peacekeeping forces to participate in a special operation in Ukraine.

"We are preparing, we will play out scenarios, but we are doing it confidentially," the Tagesschau portal quoted him as saying.

Pistorius specified that the conditions of deployment of the contingent will be determined by the mandate, scope and requirements of the parties to the conflict.

At the same time, the defense minister emphasized that the participation of ground troops in the fighting in Ukraine is not considered. According to him, it is impossible to predict the future of the Ukrainian side at the moment.

Earlier, on 4 December, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a speech in the Bundestag that Germany would not send its troops to Ukraine in the current situation. He also said that it was premature to discuss further actions after the cease-fire and peace had been reached.

In her turn, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that a German peacekeeping contingent could be sent to Ukraine after the cessation of the conflict to further resolve the situation. She said that along with security guarantees for Ukraine in the form of NATO membership, "an international presence to enforce the cease-fire" could be considered.

The day before, the German chancellor arrived in Kiev and announced the allocation of €650 million worth of arms to Kiev. He also said he wanted to "make it clear that Germany will remain the main country in Europe supporting Ukraine." Scholz arrived in Ukraine for the first time in 2.5 years.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Kiev amid Russia's special operation to defend Donbass, which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
