TheUnited States was notified of the flight of a ballistic missile in a nuclear-free hypersonic Oreshnik missile half an hour before the launch and did not mistake the Russian missile for something "larger in scale". Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson published on December 6.

Asked about the mechanism by which the leaders of Russia and the United States could talk to each other to avoid nuclear war, Lavrov said that Russia has a channel that is automatically activated when a ballistic missile is launched.

"As for the hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik, the system sent a message to the United States 30 minutes before the launch. They knew it was going to happen and did not mistake it for something larger and really dangerous," the minister said.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov called the Oreshnik test a signal of Russia's readiness to respond to the West. He also added that Russia's military doctrine states that the most important thing is to avoid nuclear war.

The live test of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, one of Russia's newest medium-range missile systems, was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 21. He specified that the move was in response to the escalation by Western countries in Ukraine.

In the following days, the head of state clarified that Russia would continue these tests and that the decision on the serial production of missiles had already been made. He also revealed that the Oreshnik has 10 separating blocks that attack the target and everything in the epicenter of the explosion turns to dust.

The strike hit the Yuzhmash plant in Dnipropetrovsk. Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People's Republic, called the launch a fair response to Kiev's aggression against peaceful Russian cities.

Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said during a briefing on November 21 that Russia had notified Washington about the launch of the Oreshnik. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained on Nov. 22, Moscow did not warn the United States about the launch of Russia's new medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik, but an automatic alert was triggered.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which began on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
