Enter the Volga twice: Izvestia readers have chosen objects for the new 1,000-ruble bill

A week ago, Izvestia, as part of the New Banknotes project (launched in 2021), launched a vote among its readers to select symbols for the back of the modernized thousand-dollar banknote. The leaders were the Saratov automobile bridge over the Volga River (voting in VKontakte) and the monument to Salavat Yulaev (voting in OK). Curiously, these same sights are in the top 3 according to the preliminary results of the popular vote of the Central Bank. However, they occupy the third and second place, respectively. The leader on the Central Bank's website is a high-speed passenger hydrofoil motor ship "Meteor". Whether it will be the winner or there is still an opportunity to influence the outcome of the plebiscite on the choice of objects for the new thousand, - in the material of "Izvestia".
What objects of the Volga Federal District were chosen by Izvestia readers for the new thousand
Last Thursday, November 28, the Central Bank presented a short list of 25 objects of the Volga Federal District (Volga Federal District) to the popular vote on the choice of symbols for the back side of the modernized thousand-dollar bill. The regulator opened the poll itself on November 29, and it will last until December 12, when the results will be summarized.
At the same time Izvestia announced the beginning of its voting within the framework of the project "New banknotes" (from 2021 our readers vote for the choice of objects for modernized banknotes) in social networks "VKontakte" and OK. We also started on November 28, and on December 5we summarized the results.
The top 3 in "VKontakte" turned out as follows:
- Saratov automobile bridge over the Volga River (Saratov and Engels, Saratov region);
- Perm Museum of Local Lore (Perm, Perm region);
- Kazan Family Center (Kazan , Republic of Tatarstan).
Top 3 in Odnoklassniki:
- Salavat Yulaev Monument (Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan);
- Monument of Glory, Samara (Samara region);
- Museum and Exhibition Center "Samara Space" (Samara, Samara Region).
The Central Bank decided to resort to a popular vote on the choice of objects for the back of the thousand-dollar banknote a year after it first released (October 16, 2023) it into circulation and then recalled it two days later. On the reverse side of the banknote was located the palace church in the Kazan Kremlin built in the XVII century, which now houses the Museum of the History of Statehood of the Tatar people and the Republic of Tatarstan. The building has been used for secular purposes since the beginning of Soviet times, when the cross was removed from the former church. In the design of the thousand-dollar bill, the building is the same - without the cross. At the same time, the Syuyumbike tower with a crescent moon is depicted next to it, which caused a flurry of criticism of the Central Bank by Orthodox activists. This year, the Central Bank decided to completely change the design, rather than correct the old one, to abandon religious buildings as images on the banknote and announced a popular vote.
Interestingly, three participants of the banknote advisory council interviewed by Izvestia, who took part in the presentation of the symbols last Thursday, unanimously noted that their choice would have fallen on the monument to Salavat Yulaev. According to the totality: recognizability, historical value, artistry of the image, explained Dmitry Mordvintsev, professor of the Department of Communicative Design of the Russian State University of Art and Industry named after S.G. Stroganov. Photographer Vladimir Klavikho-Telepnev and Arseny Meshcheriakov, head of the School of Design at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, agreed with them.
However, in the Central Bank's voting for the evening of December 5, the monument to Salavat Yulaev is still in second place, the Saratov automobile bridge over the Volga River is in third place, and the high-speed motor ship Meteor, a native, if I may say so, of Nizhny Novgorod (formerly the city of Gorky), is in the lead. There is even a monument to the "winged" motor ship in one of its districts. By the way, Dmitry Mordvintsev mentioned it as one of the interesting objects in his conversation with Izvestia.
Is it still possible to influence the choice of symbols for the modernized thousand-dollar bill?
Do the objects chosen by the Izvestia readers have a chance to appear on the reverse side of the modernized thousand-dollar bill? Absolutely. First of all, the Central Bank's popular vote will last for another week - until December 12. Therefore, everyone can still make their choice. However, you can vote for only one symbol.
Secondly, for the updated banknote, most likely, several attractions of the Volga Federal District will be needed. As Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergey Belov explained last Thursday, as a rule, three groups of images are used for the reverse side : the first plan, for which the objects should be recognizable and set the theme, the second plan (support the main theme, complement it and create a general background) and the third (micro patterns, microdrawings).
In any case, Izvestia readers were very interested in the proposal to vote for a symbol for the updated thousand-dollar bill. For example, Miron Denisov wrote that "interesting variants were presented, it is even difficult to choose". This reader gave his vote to the Zhigulevskaya HPP on the Volga. And Sofia Kondratieva noted that the most relevant now is the Monument of Glory in Samara, and "there are enough buildings on the banknotes". By the way, some members of the advisory council on banknotes also expressed the opinion that it is better to choose non-architectural symbols.
Our readers also drew attention to the fact that such voting is an opportunity to get acquainted with the sights of Russia. Thus, Tatiana Lazareva emphasized: "How many beautiful places we have, and half of them I don't even know. It's a good reason to read more and learn more about your country". Milana Kozlova supported this point of view, noting that in Russia "there are many places worth visiting, we need to develop tourism, and then we won't want to go abroad even on vacation.
