December 7 - International Civil Aviation Day: History and Traditions

Every year on December 7, Russia and other countries celebrate International Civil Aviation Day, a professional holiday for all those whose work is connected with the sky: pilots, flight attendants, dispatchers, maintenance personnel and other specialists. In 2024 it falls on Saturday. How it is celebrated in Russia and around the world, read in the material "Izvestia".
International Day of Civil Aviation 2024: the history of the holiday on December 7
The holiday was established in 1994 by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in honor of the 50th anniversary of its creation. In 1996, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing International Civil Aviation Day as an official holiday.
Civil aviation covers all flights related to the transportation of passengers, cargo, mail and is an important part of the world transportation system. The history of the industry dates back to 1903, when brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright invented the airplane. Their flight on the Flyer lasted only 12 seconds, but it was the starting point of the aviation era.
The first passenger flight took place in the United States in 1914, beginning the commercial operation of air transportation. In the 1920s and 1930s, the first airlines were founded. During this period, airplanes became more and more advanced, increasing speed, range and comfort.
After World War II, civil aviation received a new impetus for development. Military technologies used in airplane construction allowed to create more reliable and high-speed machines. In 1944, the International Civil Aviation Organization was founded, charged with regulating international standards and coordinating flights. The 1950s was the time of jet aviation, ushering in an era of fast and affordable air transportation.
Today, airplanes are considered one of the safest and most comfortable modes of transportation. Every year, civil aviation aircraft carry more than 4 billion people, and flights are made almost anywhere in the world.
International Civil Aviation Day in Russia and around the world
In many countries of the world, including Russia, International Civil Aviation Day is accompanied by various events that are designed to remind about the importance of the aviation industry.
On this day airlines hold festive events, during which they honor especially distinguished employees, pilots and technical staff, present awards and certificates for their contribution to the development of civil aviation.
As part of the celebration, ICAO and national agencies often launch information campaigns about the role of civil aviation in society. Various educational programs for young people are organized to promote professions in the aviation industry, open days are held at aviation universities and airports, where guests are introduced to the work of pilots, engineers and dispatchers.
Also on this day, conferences are held to discuss flight safety, innovations and further development of the industry. In some countries the holiday is celebrated with air shows, exhibitions of airplanes and aerotechnics.
Who and how to congratulate on International Civil Aviation Day in 2024
Congratulations on International Civil Aviation Day are addressed to everyone involved in air transportation: pilots, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, engineers and technical staff. Here are a few examples of how you can do this:
