Maria Zolotareva, a senior lecturer of the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy of the Russian Technical University MIREA, warned that microorganisms dangerous for health can accumulate in pillows.

In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Thursday, December 5, the expert said that mites, fungi and bacteria live in pillows. The most common "residents" of pillows - dust mites, which feed on dead skin cells. They can cause allergies, as well as asthma and other respiratory diseases. They multiply most actively in conditions of high humidity and heat, so it is necessary to regularly clean and ventilate pillows.

There are also various types of bacteria and fungi present in pillows. Mold can lead to allergic reactions and respiratory problems.

"Also in the pillows is found and golden staphylococcus, which can cause skin infections such as furuncles and carbuncles," - warned the expert.

Zolotareva advised to choose pillows whose fillings are less susceptible to microbial accumulation: synthetic materials such as latex or chollofiber, she said, have antibacterial properties and are easier to wash.

She cautioned that natural pillow fillings, such as down and feather, require more care. Pillows with fillings such as buckwheat or bamboo are well ventilated and keep dry, but natural fiber particles can cause irritations and allergic reactions.

The expert emphasized that taking care of pillows and their timely replacement is the key to health. They should be washed at least once every three months, protective covers should be used and care recommendations should be followed. Covers are better to choose from dense fabrics, such as teak or sateen, with zippers. They prevent the penetration of dust and microorganisms inside the pillow.

At the end of November, traumatologist Sergei Malykhin told Izvestia that the right choice of pillow helps to support the spine, relieves tension from the neck and back and contributes to a comfortable awakening. When choosing an orthopedic pillow, check for quality and material certificates. Memory-foam should return to its original position after pressing, and latex should be durable and well ventilated.

On November 7, osteopathic doctor Dmitry Simkin urged drivers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel to use an orthopedic pillow. According to him, it will unload the lumbar and protect the spine from the formation of herniated discs, writes kp.ru. He urged drivers to position themselves on the seat in such a way that the back is fully adjacent to the backrest, including the shoulder blades, notes 360.ru.

On November 1, the press service of Roskachestvo reported the detection of dust mites in down and feather pillows from several manufacturers. Dust and mites were found in the products of 12 brands out of 15 investigated. In the pillows of five brands revealed violations of GOST requirements, notes NSN. A total of 15 brands of pillows with down and feather filling were checked. The study was conducted on 57 indicators of quality, safety and reliability of labeling, RT reports.
