Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov has notified Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces Charles Brown about exercises in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea with firing and launching of high-precision missiles. This was reported in the Russian Defense Ministry on December 5.

"During the conversation, the American side was notified about exercises in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea of the groups of forces of the Navy and the Russian Air and Space Forces with the performance of practical firing and launches of high-precision missiles," the ministry said.

It added that this information was conveyed to the United States in order to avoid incidents due to the close proximity of the area of Russian exercises with NATO and U.S. ships.

The phone call between the chiefs of general staff of the Russian and U.S. Armed Forces became known earlier in the day. The Bloomberg agency specified that the leaders discussed a number of issues of global and regional security, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier, on December 3, the Defense Ministry reported that the Russian Navy and the Russian Air and Space Forces (VKS) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea performed launches of sea- and air-based missiles in the course of exercises to practice the methods of joint actions of groups.

The exercise involved more than 1,000 servicemen, 10 ships and support vessels, 24 aircraft, including MiG-31I fighters of the Russian Armed Forces with hypersonic missiles "Kinzhal", as well as coastal missile system "Bastion".

The Russian Armed Forces exercises were held from December 1 to 3 under the leadership of Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.
