- The U.S. State Department warned Romania of the consequences of abandoning its pro-Western course

Possible rejection of Romania's pro-Western course as a result of presidential elections in the country may lead to a reduction in investments. This was stated in a statement of the US Department of State on December 5.
The statement noted that the U.S. side is closely following the presidential election in Romania, adding that the United States does not interfere in the process.
It also said that the United States values Romania's contribution as a strong NATO ally and EU partner. The statement also pointed out that the progress the country has made in gaining a foothold in the transatlantic community cannot be stopped by other states that want to change its foreign policy course.
"Any such change would have serious negative consequences for US security cooperation with Romania, while a decision to restrict foreign investment would discourage US companies from continuing to invest in Romania," the report stressed.
On November 24, the first round of the presidential election took place. According to official data, Romania's independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu is leading with 22.94% of the vote. Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Romania Salvation Union party, has 19.17% of the votes. A second round of voting is planned for December 8, as none of the candidates managed to get more than 50%.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on November 25 did not make any predictions about how Georgescu's possible victory might affect relations between Romania and Russia. The presidential spokesman added that the Kremlin would monitor further developments.
