South Korean President Yun Seok-yol accepted the resignation of the country's Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun. This was reported by the agency Yonhap on December 5.

The agency added that the South Korean leader appointed the country's ambassador to Saudi Arabia Choi Byung-hyuk as the new defense minister.

"President Yun Seok-yol approved the dismissal of National Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who proposed martial law on the 5th and then announced his resignation the day before, and appointed Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Choi Byung-hyuk as the new Minister of National Defense, Presidential Chief of Staff Jeong Jin-seok announced," the South Korean agency wrote.

It is reported that Chung Jin-seok described the new defense minister as "not only having a broad understanding of security issues in general, but also an operational expert with extensive field experience" and "a principled person who carries out missions with dedication and abides by the rules."

Republic of Korea President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law in the country on Dec. 3. He cited the threat of power paralysis caused by attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings as the reason for the move. Commander of the emergency regime, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn-soo noted that until martial law is lifted in the republic, the activities of parliament, political parties and associations are prohibited. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul, the country's capital.

Later that day, the South Korean government voted in favor of lifting martial law in the country. Yun Seok-yol then canceled an emergency gathering of military personnel and sent those who had arrived for the draft back.

The opposition Republic Party, in turn, demanded the president's resignation and said it intended to charge Yun Seok-yeol with treason. At the same time, all heads and senior secretaries of the presidential administration of South Korea resigned. In addition, the republic's labor unions announced a general strike.

On December 4, opposition parties said they would launch a procedure to impeach the president. It is specified that the vote may take place in Parliament on December 6-7.

On the same day, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun submitted his resignation.
